1. Definition & Material Composition
Copperplate paper adhesive — also referred to as coated paper adhesive — is a laminated pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) system built around a smooth, calendered, high-gloss coated paper face stock. The term "copperplate" originates from the printing trade, where copper-engraved plates demanded a paper surface of exceptional smoothness; modern copperplate (also called art paper or coated paper) retains that defining characteristic: a mineral-coated surface that reflects light uniformly.
A finished roll of copperplate paper adhesive is a three-layer composite:
| Layer | Material | Typical Weight / Thickness | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Face stock | Calendered coated (glossy) paper | 70 – 120 g/m² | Printable surface; carries label artwork |
| Adhesive | Acrylic PSA (solvent or water-based) | 18 – 26 g/m² coat weight | Bonds face stock to the substrate |
| Release liner | Glassine 78 g/m² (standard); PET / CCK optional | 60 – 90 g/m² | Protects adhesive; feeds through dispensing equipment |
The face stock's coated surface enables sharp dot reproduction for barcode scanning, photographic label artwork, and luxury brand packaging. Unlike kraft or woodfree substrates, copperplate paper requires an adhesive with precisely calibrated tack and peel values to prevent curling, delamination, or print haze during converting and end-use.
2. How Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Works
A pressure-sensitive adhesive forms a bond through viscoelastic flow: when moderate pressure is applied, the adhesive deforms and makes intimate contact with the microscopic peaks and valleys of the substrate surface (wet-out). This physical process requires no solvent activation, no heat cure, and no separate catalyst — hence "pressure-sensitive."
Three measurable properties govern PSA performance in label applications:
| Property | Definition | Why It Matters | Test Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial Tack | Instant grab on first contact | Prevents label lift on high-speed labeling lines | ASTM D2979 (Polyken probe) |
| Peel Adhesion | Force to remove label at 180° angle | Determines bond integrity after application | PSTC-101 |
| Shear Resistance | Resistance to slow parallel sliding | Prevents label creep on bottles and curved surfaces | PSTC-107 |
3. Available Product Grades
Zhejiang Guanhao Functional Material Co., Ltd. supplies two primary grades of copperplate paper adhesive, each targeting distinct performance and cost requirements:
High Quality Copperplate Paper Adhesive
The premium grade is engineered for demanding sectors — pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and luxury goods — where visual presentation is non-negotiable. It delivers superior initial tack (≥ 15 N/25 mm), excellent cold-temperature performance down to −25 °C, and a high-gloss surface (≥ 80 GU) that maximises colour gamut in UV flexo, offset, and digital toner printing. The archival, acid-free formula prevents yellowing over time, making it suitable for extended shelf-life labels.
Ordinary Copperplate Paper Adhesive
Designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive runs in logistics, retail, and food labelling, this grade offers reliable adhesion on glass, PET, and HDPE substrates. It is compatible with both thermal-transfer and direct-thermal printing heads and is available in large roll formats with a minimum order of just 50 rolls — well-suited for converters and brand owners managing mixed SKU portfolios.
| Feature | High Quality Grade | Ordinary Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Tack | ≥ 15 N/25 mm ★★★★★ | ≥ 12 N/25 mm ★★★☆☆ |
| Gloss Level | High-gloss (≥ 80 GU) | Semi-gloss (50–65 GU) |

6. Industries & Applications
Copperplate paper adhesive is one of the most versatile self-adhesive materials in the global label market. Its combination of high-gloss printability, reliable adhesion, and competitive cost makes it suitable for a broad range of end-use sectors:
7. Application Instructions
For best results on automated labelling lines and manual dispensers, follow these five steps. Correct handling and surface preparation are the single largest factors influencing final bond strength.
Condition the Material
Allow roll stock to acclimatise at 20–25 °C and 50 % RH for at least 24 hours before converting or application. Avoid temperature extremes during transit and storage.
Prepare the Substrate
Ensure the application surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, oils, or release agents. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol for critical applications such as glass vials or stainless steel housings.
Apply the Label
Position carefully; press firmly from centre outward with a squeegee or roller at ≥ 200 N/m to achieve full wet-out. Avoid air entrapment under the label face.
Allow Dwell Time
Initial handling strength is reached within 15–30 minutes. Full bond strength (for rated peel and shear values) develops within 24 hours at room temperature.
Store Unused Roll Stock
Reseal rolls in original packaging. Store horizontally on pallets at 18–25 °C away from direct light and ozone sources. Do not stack more than five rolls high.
